Dear President-elect Obama: I know there’s already a list a mile long of worthy projects for federal dollars, but perhaps you should allocate a few billion for asbestos remediation from public schools.
Students at Crestwood Middle School will be spending Wednesday at home after air quality tests found elevated levels of asbestos at their school Tuesday.
Students were evacuated from Crestwood Tuesday afternoon, after one of six air quality tests peformed at the school came back too high, said school spokesman Tom Cupitt. It was not clear today how elevated the asbestos levels are.
The school’s 620 students were taken to Oscar Smith High School, just under three miles away, where they spent the rest of the day in the auditorium.

It’s shameful that in 2009 we still have children at risk of developing mesothelioma and other diseases because of asbestos present in schools. Surely we can put thousands of Americans to work by protecting thousands of school children from exposure to such a toxic substance.

This morning on NPR a person being interviewed said that for the federal jobs program to start immediately it would have to begin with the most obvious needs, and he used road work as an example.
Asbestos in older public buildings, especially schools, seems to be an obvious health problem problem, and its removal should be a priority of the first order.
We need to get your idea some additional exposure because, if more people were aware of the asbestos-in-schools situation, I think there would be a good deal of support for including asbestos remediation in the Obama job program.
